4 photos of the amazing wildlife in Jasper National Park
Other than its mountains, Jasper National Park is probably most famous for its wildlife. Over 50 species of mammals live in this UNESCO World Heritage site, including elk, moose, caribou, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, bears, wolves and more. While it's always possible to spot an animal on your own, a wildlife sightseeing tour will increase your chances and include local information and stories.
Bear
Both black bears and grizzly bears live here. They emerge (hungry!) from hibernation around April; stay 100 meters away.
Elk
Elk are the park's most common large mammals. In spring, mother elk protect their new babies fiercely. Do not approach!
Bighorn sheep
Bighorn sheep are often seen along Jasper highways, licking salt off the road. Stay in your car and drive carefully.
Moose
Moose are iconic Canadian animals. But they're still wild, and it is dangerous and illegal to touch or feed wildlife.
